Keeping your home warm and comfortable...

This section is all about the ways in which you can keep your home warm and comfortable. Improving the insulation in your home is a vital step towards a low energy home, and we have all the information and support you need to get started.

Loft Insulation

Loft Insulation

In a home without insulation, around 25% of heat loss goes right through the roof. Getting your loft insulated will (almost literally!) put a lid on wasted heat in your home and help to lower your fuel bills. It is recommended that you have around 200 - 250mm (8-10 inches) of loft insulation installed and if you have less than this then you should definitely consider a top-up.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Cavity Insulation

Your walls may be hiding a surprising secret. If your property has cavity walls that are not insulated, as much as 33% of the heat that you lose in your home could be passing right through the brickwork. If your home was built from the 1930’s onwards, there is a very good chance that your home will have cavity walls. If this is the case, and they have not yet been insulated, it is highly recommended you have them filled.

The work involved is very simple and the process is very safe thanks to the material that is now used to insulate the cavity. To find out more about cavity wall insulation, download the CB Factsheet.

Solid Wall Insulation

Homes built before 1930 are not very likely to have a cavity wall construction. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to put up with a cold home if you do own an older property! Walls made of solid brick, stone and timber frame can all still be insulated. The work involved in insulating a home with solid walls is more substantial than cavity wall filling and generally more costly. However, the benefits can be substantial and improving the insulation in your home can make it a much more comfortable place to live.
